Explorers Continue Streak of Dominance
By Jorge Garcia
Saturday night the Christopher Columbus High School Explorers faced the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School Wolverines at Tropical Park for the twelfth time. The Explorers have never lost to the Wolverines, and they made sure to continue that streak when they dominated the game on Saturday night.
The Explorers opened up the game with a 96 yard kick returned for a touchdown by senior defensive back Josh Jobe, and they controlled the momentum for the rest of the game. The Wolverines’ first scoring attempt was thwarted when senior cornerback Trajan Bandy blocked a field goal attempt; the Explorers played another great defensive game, only allowing three points in the first three quarters of the game. Sophomore defensive tackle Dylan Perez and senior defensive tackle Mike Rodriguez made running the ball for the Wolverines a nightmare. Junior linebacker Shawn McReynolds and sophomore linebacker Jordan Griffin tackled everything in sight, and proved to be a terror for the Wolverines’ offense; McReynolds also had an interception during the matchup.
The Explorers’ offense looked much better this week as freshman
running back Henry Parrish rushed impressively this week, scoring a touchdown, and showcasing his raw talent and natural ability. Senior running back Yael Gomez also had an impressive game, muscling through the Wolverines’ defense and working the trenches.
The combination of the Explorers’ grueling defense and their strong running attack led them to a 24-10 win over the Wolverines. The Explorers made sure to continue and extend their winning streak against Belen, and now the Explorers will hope to continue their domination against Coral Park this week.
