Florida Blue Key Debate Tournament Recap
The Columbus debate team traveled to Gainesville this past weekend to compete in the annual Florida Blue Key tournament. The team brought along 14 members, competing in the Novice and Varsity Lincoln-Douglas pools as well as in a mixed Policy pool. Competing in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas, seniors Angel Toro and Daniel De Izaguirre finished with records of 4-2. Angel made it to the double octofinal round, and Daniel was forced to face Angel in the triple octofinal round, with Angel being moved on to the double octofinal round due to being the higher seed. Sophomore Albert Sanchez and junior Jesus Capo also scored well in the Varsity Lincoln-Douglas pool, with records of 3-3. The Explorers also competed well in the Policy pool, represented by Andres Perez and Marcos Ortega and Sebastian Lasaga and Gabriel Laffee despite being placed into a pool of both Varsity and Novice teams. Brandon Ruiz and Andrew Castro also put up a big win against Fort Lauderdale in the Policy pool. Also representing Columbus in Lincoln-Douglas were Javier Hernandez, Ryan Yglesias, Carlos Gutierrez, and Charles Gannon.
The Explorers are looking to improve in the coming month, competing in local tournaments while preparing for their next big tournament in New Orleans. The team will be traveling to New Orleans December 8th-11th and are looking forward to improving their records.
