The First Football Game: Through the Eyes of Mr. Explorer
By Robert Lewis
You’d think that after doing something for roughly 57 years it’d get boring. One night last week (Wednesday, August 26th) proved that, at times, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
As many of you Explorers may know, that evening at 7 pm the Columbus Football team’s first football game of the season began. The whole day I’d been shaking in my boots with excitement. I was truly looking forward to showing off my new helmet, cuffs, and boots at the game that night. Finally, the time came to leave my home in the S.A.C. office and head to Tropical Park. When I got there I was ecstatic, so much so that I thought it’d knock my pants (along with my socks) off. That’s when I looked down and realized I wasn’t wearing any pants! Yes, you read that right. I – Mr. Explorer – had become the embodiment of a plot of an old sitcom episode. I darted back to Columbus, made myself decent, and got back to Tropical Park with just enough time to run out of the tunnel bearing our school’s colors.
If that’s not out of the ordinary, I don’t know what is. From the sidelines, I witnessed a rocky first quarter which initially left us behind the Generals by 12 points. The Explorers then achieved a riveting comeback which resulted in a touchdown and safety. Then, as if to approve the change in momentum, the Big Man upstairs clapped out some lightning. After suffering through the 20 minute lightning delay, the Explorers returned and added points to the board to take the lead for the first time of the night. Another warning from the lightning alarm sent both teams into a tentative half-time, but not before the Generals could score and make the scoreboard read 18-16 in their favor. At half-time, Coach Merritt said that, “We expect to win, and we can do so if everybody does their job.”
Unfortunately, the game was postponed, but the Explorers finished the job in grand fashion last Friday afternoon when the game was resumed, rallying to beat the Jackson Generals and start the season 1-0. I’ll see everybody this Friday night when we take on Northwestern.
