Track Wins State Championship for 2nd Year in a Row
This past weekend the Columbus Track Team traveled to UNF in Jacksonville to compete at the 2019 Class 4A State Championships.
After qualifying Cameron Daniel and Xzavier Henderson in the 400m for Saturday’s finals the team started Saturday with a 2nd place finish. Nicholas Aixala, Kevin Kergean (1600m), and Malcolm Brown, Sebastien Cantave in the 4×800 with a season best 7:54.71, scoring 8points. At the same time Gary Cooper was competed in the Shot Put where he finished in 5th place good for 4 points. Next came the 400m where Xzavier Henderson came home with a state title with a time of 46.77 (a new school record) and Cameron Daniel with a 4th place finish, combined scoring 15 points. Next came the 200m, where the Explorers trailed Flagler Palm Coast by 6 points. Again Xzavier Henderson and Cameron Daniel finished finished 2nd and 5th respectably to score 12 points to put the Explorers up by 6 points. With the 4x400m remaining and a six point lead (Sebastien Cantave, Xzavier Henderson, Courtney Holmes, Cameron Daniel) ran a season 2nd best 3:16.71 and finish third to clinch a second consecutive 4A State Championship. Also competing for the Explorers were Tristan Dodge (High Jump) and Elijah Roberts (Shot Put). The Explorers finished with 45 points ahead of second place FPC with 41 points.
